Studio Brief 01 - Eye Magazine

In order to get an idea of how publications write type for the design orientated audience, analysis was done on eye magazine who's content is mostly based around type design. In this issue there is an article that documented the unique lettering of London from A-Z.

Analysis was done to identify the article for its use of language, amount of information and layout. Surprisingly there was a limited amount of explanation of the typeface's characteristics. The captions for each photo were mainly explaining the history of the establishment and the type designer. The lack of typographic descriptions are suited to its audience. The Eye Magazine is subscribed by predominantly type interested designers and therefore the audience’s knowledge of type can decipher the intricacies by themselves. Therefore the historical information is new to the reader rather than explaining information they already know.

When the typefaces are analysed, the author explains the role of the typeface, how it sits in context to the architecture of the building, the possible quirks of the type that makes it unique, how the typeface works in relation to actually being inside the pubs and restaurants, how the typeface sits alongside the other businesses and gives a brief summary of the typeface itself.
The captions are short and concise. This makes for easy reading and allows the reader to digest a lot of information overall. Adding to that, the typeface used is a light font making the copy look less than it actually is. The photos and the captions are structured in a strict grid structure, giving the reader a sequenced reading experience that makes flipping through pages easy.

As for distinguishing the article within the magazine, Eye explicitly uses large type and white space to communicate to the reader when the article starts and where it changes topics. The use of a smaller cut size on glossy stock for the letter form images help direct more of the readers attention and in a way because it is the only example used in the magazine, it becomes a highlight feature.

Analysing Eye Magazine is appropriate to understanding how publications market themselves to a design audience. This is supported by the popularity of the magazine and how focused it is on type and design
