In The Vignelli Canon, Vignelli comments on the topic creating a sequence and the role of white space within a publication.
Because turning of the pages is a integral part of the reading experience, Vignelli values a well thought out sequence that creates flow within the publication. Vignelli prefers a forceful sequence with the picture and negative space dominating the spread commanding the attention of the reader. He values a sequence that disappears to the eyes of the reader, in other words creating a sequence that is natural, casual and is effortless for the reader to move through the pages.
Through his preferred sequence of a full bleed spread to a full bleed page facing a white page with a picture in either corners, there can be some comments made on his use of negative space. By creating full bleed page/spreads, there is no room for negative space, thus leaving no distraction for the reader. This is further emphasised by the lack of body copy that accompanies the picture when there is negative space.
Vignelli's views white space as an organizer and as a tool in creating a tone of voice. White space helps structure the content on the page by separating the parts of the message and arranging them within the context of the page. Tight margins create tension between text, images and the edges of the page. Wider margins deflate the tension and bring serenity to the page. These are aspects to think about when I create my publication. How the margins between the images and the edge of the page can relate to the tone of voice and context of the publication.
