Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Manifesto

For this Brief, I have decided to focus my publication on explaining the relationship between figure and ground, more specifically, the role of negative space in publications.
Negative space plays an important role by creating the tone of voice and forming the layout amongst many other aspects as well. Therefore to create a guide on how utilise negative space would be beneficial in understanding the structure and formalities in placing content within publication. However, I will primarily be investigating the relationship between negative space and the pictures within a publication. How a thought out placement of photographs can help effectively communicate a visual flow between the pages and more importantly establish the personality of the publication. While doing so, I will also be commenting on the elements of balance, alignment, proportion and grids that will help with the placement and scale of the photographs.

To help me explain this relationship within the subject of figure and ground, I will be looking at references such as Massimo Vignelli's page construction, the use of grids within a publication and how negative space is used in different types of publications.
