So progressing on from my criticism of the static forms of the rectangular signage, I drew inspiration from the pictograms of the 2016 Rio Olympics and the shapes of pebbles. The forms are designed intentionally so that the distinctive apex of the sign points in the same direction as the arrow shown. This creates a more dynamic design that stands out slightly more to the visitor. As for signage that does not include a direction, I designed the signs to still retain the similar shape but made the distinctive apex point downwards. It keeps consistency and establishes the identity to the reader. However there were problems with these designs, namely when there were too many within a area.
In this example, the shape does not work in context. The signs look mismatched and out of place. The irregular forms clash with one another and don't create a visual identifier.
Therefore by retaining the rectangular shapes, it helps contrast against the almost boomeranged shaped main entrance sign that becomes the identifier. Due to the design as well, the apex points downwards, subtly letting the visitor know that this is the main entrance.
The choice to hang the sign partially off from the wooden backing is to tackle the issue of legibility from a distance. Despite the lettering on the sign is illegible from a distance, because of the bold colouring and unique placement, it still draws the visitor's attention guiding them to the next area of the zoo.
Along with the blue colouring, the flora chosen is appropriate with the area's enclosures.
The colour scheme carried on throughout the area. The choice of placement for this particular sign is meant facing away from the entering visitors point of view. It is to reduce confusion for them and direct the exiting visitors. This is because the layout of Tropical World makes the visitors go back on the route they entered to exit the zoo.
Within context, the green colour scheme does fit in with the shades of flora within the enclosure.
Further enclosure appropriate signage designs, incorporating plants from the desert and a sandy colour scheme.
More signage that help guide the visitor around the zoo.
