Studio Brief 01 - Sign construction

Based off the comments from the feedback, there were concerns on the issue of how the signage was going to be placed onto the surfaces. Whether the signage would be a interchangeable or permanent fixture.

On one hand the signs are a permanent fixture because of the type of establishment Tropical World is. A zoo is not necessarily going to be changing its locations of enclosures on a frequent basis nor the sequence of areas. However on the other hand an interchangeable system allows for the zoo to create new types of signage following the same existing design. For example, the zoo could choose to experiment with more flora or different colour scheme within their signage whilst still retaining the similar angular shapes that would retain the identity. Not only can the interchangeability be limited to way finding but the educational signage that inform the visitor on the enclosure.

Taking the idea of interchangeability, the thought of hanging picture frames or art work in a common household came to mind. The way the frame simply hanged on an anchor that made it easy for the user to adjust and change.

This is my proposed hinge system for the signage. It is a system that allows for interchangeability due to the open hinge. The user simply slides under, then up and towards his/herself to hang the sign. The two circles in the top panel represent the placement of screws and in the 2nd image, the metal fixture can be glued on with epoxy to the plastic backing of the signage. This system requires less screwing and reduces the damage done onto the backing surface compared the existing signage fixtures. This system does have its limitations however, for backing surfaces such as glass or brick which are seen at the pathway towards Tropical World's entrance, this may not be the most suitable choice. The existing method may be more effective. All in all it is a solution that will be appropriate for majority of Tropical World's signage.
