Studio Brief 02 - Designers in the 80s

Whilst there is the option to go down the route of recreating the iconic 80s artistic style within my publication, there is also the idea to take inspiration from designers in the 80s. They were communicating ideas and visual aesthetics that were more toned down compared to the stereotypical 80s style. These designs incorporate an either modernist or post modern route.

Neville Brody

Neville Brody's work on The Face magazine could be a source of inspiration as both the magazine and Studio Brief leaflet are a form of publication. Hence the design elements from the magazine could be used in the leaflet.

David Carson

David Carson's post modernist work could be used however due to the nature of the publication reaching out to broad audience, legibility and clearly displayed information is key. Therefore the choice for a radical post modernist style would not be entirely appropriate. However some elements could be included just not as visually strong as Carson's iterations.

Armin Hoffman

Armin Hoffman's work is similar to that of Müller-Brockmann and would pose as a guide to structuring the content in the leaflet alongside images.

Paula Scher

Paula Scher's work takes on a more post modernist approach that would be a more engaging approach for the younger target audience as compared to the clean modernist style. This style engage more due to its irregularities and "fun" set typography.

Paul Rand

Paul Rand's work on book cover design and posters can be incorporated into the leaflet design, especially through his use of block colours and unique overlaying shapes. His work also relates to that of Saul Bass, who is known for his work on film and poster design.

What's interesting about Saul Bass's work is that through his use of colour and shape, it creates an almost ominous tone which could be a fitting tone for the leaflet as it is supposed to warn people of the dangers of electricity.

Overall these artists pose as sources of design elements that can be drawn from to create a publication that effectively communicates its message whilst being relevant to the times.
