A bolder, thicker stem width is better in replicating the thick stokes made by the Maori wood carvings. The thicker stems accentuate the characteristics of the typeface, making it look rugged and hand drawn.
Bringing these options to feedback, there was a range of opinions on the representation of the Maori.
Some people preferred Aperto Com and Mariposa Sans because of its characteristics that are visually more similar to the artistic style of the Maori. Basically, these two typefaces are more explicit in communicating the hand drawn look which are more associative for some people.
Some prefer Mentor Sans because its features are more reserved. The typeface retains the humanist quality yet comes across as a contemporary, modern typeface. The benefit of Mentor Sans over the other two is that does not create into a stereotypical look for the Maori. Often times certain cultures are represented by the same look that over time can become overdone and 'tacky'. Mentor Sans presents a modern alternative to the cliched look of the Maori that can help improve their image.
