To demonstrate the sculptural qualities of letterforms in relation to Noguchi's sculptures and anniversary of his death.
The typographic sculptures will explore original compositions as well as paying a homage to some of his famous pieces. This will show a personal and better understanding of the forms of letterforms and how they can be combined to create sculpture.
Deliverables
Publication
- Having a stand alone publication will allow for more freedom in its look and design as it does not have to conform to the museum's branding guidelines.
Presentation of sculptures
By having these sculptures be presented this way as shown above, the reader gets an undistracted look at Noguchi's forms. The sculptures look like they are part of the page rather than of an image. There could be sections in the publication where the typographic sculptures are made to look like they are part of a photograph of Noguchi's work.
Tone of voice and content
- Educational
- Intended to give a brief overview of Noguchi as a sculptor
- His significance as a sculptor
- How there is a similarity between the shape of letterforms and sculpture.
- How Noguchi's 30th anniversary is celebrated through typography.
- An explanation of the type sculpture and Noguchi's if beneficial, but not needed on every page.
Publication's chosen typeface
Initially, the choice was to use Akzidenz Grotesk, as its rounded characteristics and its wide Super weight were suitable in creating 'sculptural' forms.
However, being that the Noguchi Museum is in New York, there should be a link between the sculptors work and the synonymous typeface of the city, Helvetica. This will demonstrate a better link between expressing sculpture through typography. By using Helvetica, it is more contextually appropriate to Noguchi's largest resource of his work and where the book will be sold.
Grid system
An 4 by 6 square grid system will provide flexibility and simplicity to compose the page's content. The margins on the in and outside are brought in more to prevent a less static use of space.
Areas to research to move on
- Past art books of Noguchi
- How do they present Noguchi on the front cover
- The front cover is important as it establishes the nature of the publication to the viewer and determines their interest
- The Hepworth Wakefield
- First hand sketches of Moore and Hepworth sculptures will provide a better understanding of the forms
- Seeing what I can learn from Hepworth and Moore's design process
- Typography
- Willi Kunz
- Emil Ruder
- Helmut Schmid
- Wolfgang Weingart
