Spin: Adventures in Typography

A publication similar to the purpose of the proposed Noguchi book is SPIN's Issue of Adventures In Typography.



As described by Tony Brook, the purpose of this 'journal' is to showcase the "creative interests and outputs" done by the studio that normally goes unseen. The experimental typefaces are a reflection of the studio's enthusiasm for "pushing boundaries and legibility, and for searching out memorable, impactful and original graphic images".

In much the same way as the Noguchi publication exploring the relationship between typographic forms and sculpture, Adrian Shaughnessy states that the experiments in this journal represent the relationship between music and typography.
"Musicians have notes, and typographic designers have the letters of the alphabet. Musicians take notes and make chords, sequences and tunes; typographic designers take letters and using existing typefaces or specially made letterforms, create statements and commentaries"
Therefore the purpose of the Noguchi book, although seemingly superficial, is relatively justified given how typography can be linked to external subjects through appropriation and experimentation. 


Looking through the spreads, it is clear that the publication acts purely as a visual reference. There is little to no information given to the experiments. Only the title of the experiment. 

On one hand, this does not give much in terms of informing or educating the reader about SPIN's process or rationale. On the hand however, because of this lack of information, the visuals of the type are enhanced and allows the reader to interpret them in their own way, either producing positive or negative reactions.

Yet despite the highly visual aspect of SPIN's Adventures in Typography, the lack of context cannot be replicated when presenting the work of Noguchi. 
To provide no context about to the relationship between typography and sculpture would only confuse the reader to the purpose of the publication. 

Furthermore, because the publication is intended to be distributed at an 'anniversal exhibition' at the Isamu Noguchi Foundation, it demands the publication to be informative  to educate people who are unfamiliar to the work of Noguchi.
