Outlining the publications design

The purpose of this publication is to demonstrate the relationship between typographic forms and sculptures.

The point of outlining the book's design is not necessarily to fully define it but to provide a rough ideas to help start the process.

Cover

Sandpaper

- High grain to produce a smoother feel.
- Mimics the textural feel of a sculpture and represents a tool used by Noguchi to refine his works.

Debossed letterforms

- Encourages the reader to feel the publication similar to a sculptors hands-on approach when designing.
- The lack of visible ink for the copy will emphasise the cover's material and make the letterforms look like sculptures on the page as their form is the only factor that defines them.

Typeface

Akzidenz Grotesk Super
Akzidenz Grotesk Bold
Akzidenz Grotesk Medium
Akzidenz Grotesk Medium Condensed

Akzidenz Grotesk is chosen to be the typeface of choice for the publication as it is contextually relevant to the typeface that was predominant during the post-war period in establishing modernism. Furthermore, the characteristics of the typeface lend itself to replicate 'sculptural' forms which demand expressive representation.

Type sculptures based on Noguchi's Araki Light fixtures

At this stage, the type sculptures will be made from Akzidenz Super and Akzidenz Medium Condensed. The two in combination produces a desirable contrast that creates aesthetically pleasing compositions.
