The use of partial typography in these promotional photos for Alix Perez & Eprom's Shades EP is an excellent use of disconnected letterforms that blend into each other and make use of the negative space for example between the 'H' and 'A'. This successful rendition of partial typefaces gives me an option to experiment with Bodoni due to its similar stem weight contrast and straight brackets. Another reason for its success is its retention of key characteristics that make the individual letter forms still recognisable.
With this find, I looked into to other musical artists that incorporate partial letterforms as their logo or album cover.
This is the album cover for heavy metal band Deafheaven called Sunbather. This typeface brings each letter form to its core figure and strips away all the unnecessary embellishments. This completely conveys mystery because I had no idea that this was a cover for a metal band. The use of light hearted colours combined with modern elegant font is a total contrast compared to the stereotypical imagery we associate with heavy metal. The limitations of this type face however is because of stripped out letter forms, a tight kerning may not be suitable for it. The single stemmed letters such as the H, E and U might get blended in with other letter forms and confuse the reader as to what the actual characters are.
Another artist that uses a partial typeface is The 1975. This style is similar to the Shades logo that isn't as extreme as Deafheaven's album cover. Along with that Studio Moross also desgined the logo for English Songwriter Jimmy Napes.
Thus with the option of creating an ambiguous and straightforward mysterious typeface, I have another option that finds a balance between the two.
