Studio Brief 02 - Typefaces for experimentation
Based on my research on Müller-Brockmann's opinions on type, Charles Mackintosh and partially formed typefaces, below are my typeface choice of what I believe interpret the corresponding themes.
My research on Müller-Brockmann aligns with my ideas on creating an ambiguous typeface that represents the unknown aspect of being mysterious. Thus I will begin to experiment with Helvetica but basing my design decisions on Akzidenz Grotesk's letterform design. This will create a more proportionate and consistent letter form design across the typeface. The reason to base my designs on Akzidenz Grotesk is for the purpose of invoking intrigue. Making the reader ask themselves why the letterforms are designed as such instead of having a typeface that is unassuming to the point of blending into its surroundings like Helvetica and Univers.
My research on the Charles Mackintosh typefaces and Exocet allows me to experiment with both Sans serif and serif typefaces. Serif typefaces evoke tradition and history which relates to the medieval and cult like atmosphere that both Mackintosh and Exocet create. On the other hand Sans Serif type allows for the unique letterform characteristics to stand out more as seen with the Mackintosh. The typefaces that reflect these properties are Clarendon, Garamond and Univers. Clarendon is a high impact serif that will still retain clarity when I alter the letterforms. Garamond's traditional style will help emphasise the cult like atmosphere. Univers's looser tracking as compared to Helvetica allows for the better legibility. Especially when the typeface will need some comprehension on first reading.
My research on partial typefaces allows me to experiment with typefaces that have similar qualities and provide the basis for the experimentation are Bodoni and Caslon. This is due to their contrasting stem length. Also I can take my design decisions on my research on the Eksell typeface.
