Study Task 02, Symbols - Logo placement and idea

Below is the current Yorkshire Sculpture Park logo and where it can be seen.

Signboards
Leaflets
Posters
Buildings

I decided that the re-design should maintain its simplicity and ease of readability in order for it to be used on a wide range of products. Thus the re-design will incorporate some aspects of the recognisable sculptures or landscapes that make this park beautiful in order to make it more unique and engaging.

Work by Anthony Caro offered some potential logo designs especially with his use of abstract shapes. In the first and second image these shapes definitely resemble the letter P and it got me thinking of manipulating similar shapes like him to make up the YSP logo.

Instead of looking into the sculptures I could experiment with some of the landscape Yorkshire is famous for. And because YSP prides itself in being an open air gallery, it would give the audience an idea of what kind of gallery they focus on. With the landscapes in mind, I can comprise the logo of just the basic shapes and have the YSP in negative space, resembling something like the sculpture formation below.

Below are some images of Henry Moore's work. The abstract shapes could also be manipulated to form the YSP logo just like with Caro's work.

The holes within Moore's sculptures also give me an idea to play around with negative space. The idea that the logo being this abstract symbol but having the YSP letter forms inside.

Alternatively I could experiment with the shape of the oak trees that surround the park. These large and imposing trees are a mainstay sculpture that are recognisable to almost everyone. With the silhouette of the tree I could make the logo versatile by changing the tree trunk to which ever current artist is on site. These variations can be used on leaflets but not on buildings or sign boards as the constant changing of symbols may become cumbersome.
