Miyake or Noguchi

After going through the research for both Noguchi and Miyake, it became apparent that there is more potential to represent Noguchi's work through 'typographic wonderment' than of Miyake.

It is the relation between fashion and typography that limits the possibility of using his work for the brief. When used alongside fashion, typography is set in the background of the image, only to provide information or to help create the brands image.

This becomes apparent when looking through Miyake's past posters of his collections where unsurprisingly the main focus are the clothes themselves. The design of Miyake's clothes is the main identifier of his brand's image, not typography. In order to achieve the brief's goal and emphasis on producing a typographic solution, there needs to be a balance between the content and the use of type itself.

The relationship between Noguchi and typography on the other hand shares a more significant aspect, form. In the same way Noguchi sculpts material to create his masterpieces, the typographer uses form to provide legibility, recognisability and aesthetic pleasure in their letterforms. It is in both typography and sculpture that the meaning is derived from its form.

Therefore the chosen anniversary for this ISTD brief is the 30th Anniversary of Isamu Noguchi's passing.
