Studio Brief 01 - Spot varnishing

Despite the initial hesitation in how having the Telok Ayer booklet in glossy would disrupt the visual consistency of the overall publication, the idea behind it was a justified reason and would also add to the diverse nature of the content. The reasoning behind the gloss is to relate to the central business district's closeness to Telok Ayer.

The initial test was not successful. Doing initial test pulls to get an idea of how the varnish will look like, spot varnish mixture unknowingly dried too fast before test pulls could be done on the actual content. A suggestion was made to use a gloss paste rather than the spot varnish liquid would help with the managing of the mixture drying out on the screen. The level of gloss however is not as shiny as the spot varnish liquid. So knowing the limitations, a plan was made to create the most efficient way to do this long process. Only 1 pull was done in a swift manner with little pause in between different photos to gloss.

This ended up in producing a more consistent quality across all of the photos. Only visible in direct light however, how the gloss was applied still produced a noticeable areas of varying smoothness, where the screen has registered better towards the middle. This highlights the limitation of hand done against commercial accuracy. The overall result is a big improvement over the initial problems which produced registration of a acceptable quality.
