Studio Brief 02 - Revised Idea

After speaking with Nick, the idea for a better digital reading experience for independent magazines had to be revised. There was hesitation in the initial idea as it would just create a slightly worse reading experience than actually reading the physical copy. The tactility of the magazine is one of the main reasons why physical reading is the best experience. There was a need to recontextualise the brief in order to justify the need to have digital forms of magazines. Therefore, rather than try to replicate or force the tactility of a physical reading experience onto a digital platform, the app should take the best advantages of digital uses and incorporate that with the editorial content. Offering an alternative reading experience for magazine readers. Furthermore, the app store's international reach and popularity of the iPad will allow for the magazines to reach wider and unknown audiences.

Problem
Traditional print magazines offer a standard reading experience that can only be varied through its own content. Furthermore, on screen magazine apps are saturated by similar user interface solutions that do not fully utilise the potential and technology of the screen and the tablet itself. The market is dominated by apps with commercial magazines that leave indie magazines out from the exposure of a wider audience.

Solution
To create a magazine app that takes advantage of on screen capabilities such as video and animated gifs to offer an alternative reading experience of independent magazines. The experimentation and creativity in editorial design from these publishers will help push the possibilities of the apps potential
