These pages work on the idea of using each individual letter of UNIVERS and making it into a poster. This is to showcase each letter in its fullest and to accentuate the unique characteristics of each letterform. James and I have chosen 3 letter each, mine being V, R and S.
For V, the sides have been shaved off and placed alongside, which is a play on the deep central cut that identifies the letterform. A bold yet thinner font is used 67 Bold Condensed to deepen the cut in the V.
The end result is that reminiscent of a palm tree leaf.
For the R, the intersection between the leg and bowl of the R is complex and the most defining area of the letterform.
So much so that the R is only partially shown and mirrored against each other, is similar to the shape of two people about to kiss. Set in the 75 Black weight, the R's are very imposing on the page, with the R's bowl curving into the leg pinching the white space whilst the curves of the R undulate to create form.
For the S, its hook shape draws a natural association to a link in a chain. So for the S's composition on the page, the three are composed to form a chain like pattern. This is emphasised through the use of Univers 39 Thin Ultra Condensed where the thin stem width makes the bends in the letterform more pronounced compared to a heavier weight.
The diagonal direction of the pattern forms an asymmetric design on the page, creating movement. Only the middle S is shown fully in the design so as to make it the most prominent element on the page as well as to communicate clearly what letterform is being represented.
