Screenprint design

Small point type was used for the screen printed pages. The small point contrasts against the majority of the publication consisting of large printed Univers. The benefit of using screen print is that the small point can be transferred into print easily. To manually set the type using hot metal typesetting or laser cut type would be too time consuming and tedious.

The aim of this screen print design is to demonstrate texture through typography. Because the type is so small, the lines of text look form different shades of grey from afar. The typesetting is reminiscent of the work seen by Wolfgang Weingart.

Screen print hardly features in the publication as its process is relatively direct in its results. The benefit of mono printing and the darkroom for example is that experimentations on the process can be done quickly and easily, which allows for more flexibility and creativity in the end result.

The end result of the screen print is less than perfect, however it is still deemed a usable print because it has been informed by the process which is in line with the context of the publication.

James's screen print design uses the cropping of type, inspired by the art of David Wolske.
