Looking at Gerry Rosentswieg's Type Faces book provided much inspiration in terms of what combination of letters can be used to form typographic faces
These are a selection of faces created using Rosentswieg's book as inspiration, some are direct translations of the ones seen inside as well as original compositions.
When designing these faces, the main aim was to achieve a balance between the vertical and curvilinear strokes that form the nose and eyes for example and thick/thin and black/condensed weights to create a more engaging composition.
A smiling mouth was avoided as it creates to casual of a face and doesn't suit the tone of voice of the publication.
These faces are shortlisted for the publication. These were the most successful in terms of being unique in its facial composition and how they work together as a group.
Rather than having a multitude of faces laid on each spread, the layout used here highlights the unique features of each face without overcrowding or overwhelming the reader.
