The first page on the left is a picture of 9/11 which became a topic of discussion in relation to the timing of this collection. From the hooded models to the provocative atmosphere of the show, the image of 9/11 sets the tone for the spread and relates to the theme of the collection.
Initially the image was supposed to have the title of the show presented over, however the text drew away from the shock factor of including a provocative image of the 9/11 tragedy in a fashion publication. This title was moved to the spread inside.
On the right is an image of this model. This was chosen because of its 'explosion' colour scheme as well as the flare which connotes igniting something or the source of the explosion. In the top right is the label of the collection which this is from. This design element is consistent throughout the publication.
Following on the theme of explosive imagery, the page opens out to an explosive sequence of images.
Initially, the spreads design was supposed be based off this mock up. The overlapping images which helped convey the chaotic nature of the show and in a way represent and explosion of photos when the reader flips open to the spread. However the design was static, and purely displayed images of the collection which the reader already has a idea of before opening up to this spread. Therefore to increase that engagement and to add another factor or surprise to the spreads layout, a reduction of the number of images and the reflection of the theme that surrounds the show was introduced.
In this final design the layout of the images are still fragmented and unorganized to reflect the 'against the establishment' feeling within this collection. In the background are images of the relatively recent Ukraine riots that happened in 2014. This is to further emphasis that feeling and play on the provocative timing of the collection. The specificity of the Ukraine riots has no relation to the collection, it was chosen to represent the feeling. Within the riots composition, the images were purposely spliced to again help convey that chaotic nature as well as communicate aggression. Not only that but the colour of the composition also was purposeful. On the left, are images of the riot police that have a neutral colour palette. This allows for the overlaid red images to contrast heavily and stand out more as opposed to a composition where by the images of both the police and rioters are mixed. This is also reflected on the right side of the spread which has the same effect. In the middle of it all is an image of police brutality which again plays on the provocative nature of the collection. On the bottom is the title "Woe onto those who spit on the fear generation" that was removed from the 9/11 page. Initially this was done in white to help with the legibility of the title however, because of the shrouded faces of the models and the appeal of having a obscure message as shown in the quotes page, the black colour scheme was chosen to relate.
