Studio Brief 02 - Test prints
A small mock up of the final publication was made to get an idea of how well tape binding will work and to get an idea of the sequence of pages. Overall the result is relatively successful. The method of simply gluing the side of page, produced a clean finish that holds up well to page turning and allows for all of the page to be seen. What was disappointing however was the colour of the tape. Once applied, the whiteness of the tape wasn't as strong as when seen as a roll. The margins also need to be reconsidered as they are too wide and explicity tell the reader of a flip out page rather than to suggest.
A second 2nd attempt was produced, this time with images and the intended sequence. The method used in the first mock up did not produce the same quality. The thinner stock resulted in some issues with the method of binding and caused much of the problems with this mock up. Because of the improper technique, some pages were starting to fall out and some had to be taped together like above. The misaligned double sided printing also caused some issues with the margins, however because this is only a test, it does not really matter until the final production of the publication. Printing this mock up also gave me a gauge of how the pages flowed, and one criticism was that of the Dior page, there was too much copy for the reader to take in. Because there was already quite a substantial amount on both pages, the addition of the interview was too much and lowered the visual attention of the spread. The reason why it worked in Margiela's book was because there was no copy on the spread, by having it as a separate form it allowed the reader to take in the information without sacrificing the visual appeal of the images on the spread.
This is the 3rd attempt which overall produced a higher quality to that of the 2nd. In order to achieve every part of the process in constructing it was taken more seriously. Rather than using a pen knife and ruler to cut the pages, a guillotine was used to get perfect edges. More time was taken in the process to bind the pages which resulted in a stronger production. The margins were better taken into account as well, producing a "suggestive" quality I was aiming for. The overall result provides a better idea of what the final publication will look like.
